The project reflects Andrey’s vision of this transformation and the impact it has had on Japanese culture.
Andrey’s practice bases in cities and getting a sense of what is going on around me by exploring public spaces. As Roland Barthes says, architecture is language, building is text. So the city is not only a material structure, but also a visual embodiment of a symbolic system that is written in certain social and economic circumstances. Therefore, it is possible to decipher the message embedded in both the functional and symbolic elements of the city's architecture.
The combination of traditional architecture with the advanced technology of the 1980s evokes a sense of nostalgia for a futuristic vision of the past. You could describe the urban situation as having a retro-futuristic aesthetic. We are talking about the state of the street layout, as well as the unique features of the urban environment.
The key visual image is based on the Japanese chochin lantern, which is closely related to Japanese business traditions. It used to serve as a light box for brand name or design and status information (lit by a candle inside). The design combines traditional Japanese calligraphy with digital glitches using artificial intelligence technology, demonstrating the ability to adapt and integrate technology while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
